Somebody in your network has an agency horror story. Maybe it's you. A six-month retainer that produced a folder of "strategy decks" and nothing else. A rebrand that never got explained, just delivered. A monthly report full of impressive-looking graphs that, when you actually asked what they meant for your revenue, nobody could answer.
Digital marketing is one of the easiest industries to sound convincing in and one of the hardest to actually be good at. So before you sign anything, here's what's worth checking—the questions that separate an agency that will genuinely move your business from one that will just keep you busy.
1. Can They Show You Real Work, Not Just Claims?
"We deliver results" means nothing on its own. Ask for actual examples—a before-and-after, a client you can look up, a number tied to a name. If an agency is vague about specifics, that's usually because the specifics wouldn't be that impressive.
2. Do They Explain Their Process, or Just Their Output?
A good agency can walk you through how they get to a result—research, positioning, design, testing—not just show you a finished logo or a finished ad and ask you to trust it. If nobody can explain the "why" behind a decision, you're not getting strategy; you're getting guesswork with a nice font.
3. Are You Talking to the Person Who'll Actually Do the Work?
A common bait-and-switch: you meet the senior team during the pitch, then get handed off to a junior account manager the moment you sign. Ask directly who will be on your account day to day, and how often you'll actually speak to them.
4. What Happens After Launch?
A website goes live. A campaign goes out. Then what? Agencies that disappear the moment the invoice is paid are common. Ask about post-launch support, how issues get handled, and whether there's ongoing reporting—not just a one-time handover.
5. Do They Push You Into a Long Contract Before You've Seen Anything?
Confidence looks like being willing to prove value in a shorter window first. Be cautious of agencies that require a 12-month lock-in before you've seen a single deliverable. It's reasonable to want commitment for real strategic work— it's not reasonable to be locked in before you know if you even like working with them.
6. Do They Understand Your Industry, or Are They Guessing?
An agency that's worked with businesses like yours will ask sharper questions in the first meeting than one that hasn't. Notice whether they're asking about your customers and your sales cycle, or just talking about their own service packages.
7. Can They Tell You What a Fair Price Actually Depends On?
Reasonable pricing varies by scope, and any honest agency should be able to explain why a project costs what it costs—not just quote a number and move on. Vague pricing conversations usually mean vague accountability later.
The Real Filter: How Do They Treat You Before You're a Client?
Pay attention to how an agency behaves during the sales conversation itself. Do they listen more than they pitch? Do they ask about your business before talking about theirs? The way they treat you before you've signed anything is usually the most honest preview of how they'll treat you after.
If you're currently going through this evaluation and want a straight answer instead of a sales pitch, we're happy to have that conversation—including telling you honestly if we're not the right fit for what you need.
